Teenager listening to his father

George Washington a man who ruled American once said that the greatest teacher he ever had was his mother. There are many reasons why you should always listen to your parents. Parents know us better than anyone. No one has a better opportunity to know what you need than your parents.

They look after you as you grow; they fed you, cloth you, and changed your diapers.

Parents have the potential to provide better advice than anyone else, unlike teachers or coaches who see you for a few minutes or hours.

Many children especially in Rwanda lost their parents, if you still have them, count yourself lucky, you are blessed to have advice from those who traveled the same road, only much farther.

Their wisdom is like a torch that lights your way through this journey of life. Though they might be poor or uneducated, they are rich in knowledge and their wisdom often includes that of their parents (your grandparents). Children who respect their parents by heeding their advice are made more attractive and appealing to others.

Even the holly bible in the book of Ephesians 6:1-3 "1 says, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

Parents want to give advice all the time because they want to protect you from making the mistakes they made or that someone they know made.

"We should regard parents as great people since they brought us to this world. They should gain respect from us. We have to show our parents that we are disciplined and responsible young people. We need to act in a more mature manner when carrying out our duties.” Say, Kasiim Butare, student from APREAD Ndera.
Sometimes, you may feel that your parents are being unreasonable. In such cases, instead of shouting back or refusing to do what they ask, it would best if you talk to them about it. That way, your parents will understand how you feel and they will have a chance to explain their side of things.

"Obedience to parents is important. If we listen to our parents and do what they ask, they will not nag us so much. Do not do things that your parents disapprove of. If parents forbid you to do something, there is a reason,” Says Henrietta Ruzibiza.

Always keep in mind that parents are places for you to harbor in your life as they love you so much. Tell them what you think or how you feel about burning issues. Talk to them about your problems. Your parents will be happy to offer their help.

To make your parents happy, you do not have to be a grade ‘A’ student, the captain of you team or a great person in this world. Love your parents and do not look down on them. Only the foolish and immature despise the advice of their parents. "Only a fool despises a parent's discipline; whoever learns from correction is wise, Says the Bible.
