The African Men’s Volleyball Club Championship is heading into its decisive final four, and it has already delivered a historic milestone: for the first time in its 47 editions, a club from Rwanda will feature in the final.
As the teams continue to fight for the trophy, key players have stood out. From dominant scorers to defensive anchors, here are key players to keep an eye on.
José Massó Álvarez (Opposite Attacker – Al Ahly)
Representing Egyptian giants Al Ahly, José Massó Álvarez has been a standout in a side yet to drop a single set in the tournament.
The Cuban opposite hitter underlined his class during the group stage clash against Nigeria Customs Service, where he produced five consecutive spikes to swing the match decisively in Al Ahly’s favour.
Fresh off a title-winning season in South Korea, Álvarez brings elite experience and firepower, forming a dangerous attacking unit alongside Abd Elhalim Mohamed Abou, who is averaging 15 points per game.
Rok Bračko (Outside Hitter – Fath Union Sport)
The 22-year-old Slovenian joined Fath Union Sport from French side Chaumont Volley-Ball and has been one of the competition’s most consistent scorers, averaging 24 points per game since his debut.
One of his standout performances came against Ghana Army in the group stage, where the Moroccan side was pushed to a tie-break. Bračko delivered in the clutch, finishing with 24 points and sealing a crucial win with a decisive spike.
Nicholas Matues (Outside Hitter – REG)
The Kenyan star has emerged as one of the tournament’s most lethal weapons. With 123 points so far, averaging 23 per match, Matues currently leads the scoring charts.
Stepping up in the absence of key figures like Dennis Ireke, he has been explosive in attack and reliable in big moments. His performances have not only fuelled REG’s continental run but also played a key role in guiding the club to the Rwanda National League final.
Matues remains a strong contender for the tournament’s best outside hitter award.
Crispin Ntanteteri (Setter – REG)
Ntanteteri has been instrumental in REG’s impressive run to the semi-finals, orchestrating play with composure and intelligence.
His tactical awareness and precision have contributed to the team’s attacking efficiency, while his service pressure and coordination at the net continue to trouble opponents.
Beyond the numbers, Ntanteteri dictates the tempo of the game, elevating teammates like Matues and captain Thon Maker Madol, and turning REG into genuine title contenders.
Allain Irakoze (Libero – Police VC)
While attackers often grab headlines, Allain Irakoze has quietly been one of Police VC’s most reliable performers.
He has recorded 34 digs with just four errors, highlighting his consistency and defensive discipline. His ability to read the game and stabilise the backcourt has proven crucial in tight encounters.
