Indeed, the Catholic Church has a lot to answer about!

Editor, I read the letter that was published in The New Times, which I read everyday online, about the need for a papal mea culpa.  As a Canadian non-practicing Catholic I applaud you for what you are asking.

Editor,

I read the letter that was published in The New Times, which I read everyday online, about the need for a papal mea culpa.  As a Canadian non-practicing Catholic I applaud you for what you are asking.

Here in Canada the Catholic Church has also shown "its real face, a face of death and not one of redemption and love.”  We have a sad history of sexual, physical and mental abuse and even death at times at the hands of our "Fathers.”

We continue to learn of how priests sexually abused our children and young people in the most heinous of ways.  And what does the Catholic Church do?  It simply moves those priests into new parishes where they continue to abuse.

Many of those victims have finally found the courage to speak out and if they’re lucky they will receive some sort of monetary compensation so they will go away and keep quiet.  But an apology?  I’m not aware of any apologies.

If I was to tell the staunch Catholics here about how complicit the Church was in Rwanda’s genocide I would be considered a traitor to the Church and told that there’s no way the priest’s and nuns would be involved in such slaughter.

Will Rwanda and her amazing people get an apology?  I doubt it.  But as Rwandans and victims of the Church you certainly have a right to demand an apology.  Keep speaking out!

Sincerely,

Marie Collins
