NYAGATARE – Maize farmers in Nyagatare district expect bumper maize harvest this season following the adoption of the land consolidation policy.

The district mayor, Fred Sabitti Atuhe told The New Times on Monday, that residents embarked on extensive maize production this season contrary to previous seasons when they practiced mixed farming.

‘We expect good maize yields this month. Last season was not much productive as a result of persistent dry spell,’ he said, adding that they also expect improved production of beans.

Innocent Rutabingwa, a farmer in Musheri sector said with this year’s production, families will not experience food shortages.

‘I also specialised in maize production this season. But the bad thing here is that residents immediately run to sell their produce without considering to store some food to drive them through the dry spell which is a well known habit in our district,’ he said.
