Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) hosted Defence Attachés for a briefing on both internal and regional security dynamics on Thursday, August 7.

The session took place at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Kimihurura, where participants were updated on Rwanda’s internal and external security situation, as well as the RDF’s engagements in United Nations peacekeeping missions and bilateral military operations.

Speaking during the event, Brig Gen Patrick Karuretwa, the Director General of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Defence, said the security briefing was a key platform for deepening collaboration.

"This strengthens our mutual understanding and contributes to our collective efforts to promote peace and security across the region and beyond,” Karuretwa said.

Countries represented at the event included Angola, China, Denmark, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Japan, Jordan, Mauritania, Namibia, Qatar, South Korea, Tanzania, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. There were also representatives from the European Union, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Following a series of presentations, Brig Gen Emmanuel Shillingi, Uganda’s Defence Attaché to Rwanda, who was among the 22 defence attachés present, expressed his appreciation for the continued engagement with defence partners through regular security briefs.

"This brief provides us with invaluable insights into the host nation’s internal and regional security dynamics, as well as the ongoing efforts to contribute to and maintain desirable regional peace and stability, which are enduring imperatives to development and eventual socio-economic transformations of our societies at all levels,” he said.

"This brief has also enabled us to make a balanced reporting and impression about the ongoing security situation,” Shillingi added.
