Rwanda Cycling Federation's new president Samson Ndayishimiye has pledged to take the sport to the next level after members of the local cycling governing body (Ferwacy) elected him to lead the federation in the next two years.

The elections were held during the federation's extraordinary assembly on Sunday to fill the positions left vacant following a series of resignations by some top officials over the past two months.

Ndayishimiye said: "My first step is to open up a fully equipped office and the next would be to increase the number of clubs in the country. This will be included in the next action plan.”

"We have a good terrain for developing cycling, especially mountain biking. And our goal is to achieve this. This can be achieved by getting rid of past experiences,” he noted.

He noted that transparency between individual clubs and the federation should be the basis for developing the sport in the country.

"To have the trust of our Federation is a blessing and it makes me very happy.”

Ndayishimiye, who was unopposed for the top position, won the elections in the second round after collecting 8 votes from 12 members who were eligible to vote.

He succeeds Abdallah Murenzi who resigned in August.

Valentin Bigango was elected first vice president while Arlette Ruyonza became Secretary General replacing Benoit Munyankindi who left the position in August after being arrested on charges of favouritism and forgery.

Daniel Katabarwa was elected as treasurer.
