Former cyclist Jean-Hubert Nkurayija Ishimwe has emerged as the sole candidate for the presidency of FERWACY, Rwanda’s cycling governing body, ahead of elections scheduled during the federation’s general assembly on May 31. Nkurayija will run unopposed after former FERWACY Secretary General Toussaint Paul Nosisi Gahitsi withdrew from the race, while current president Samson Ndayishimiye opted not to seek another term. Representing Bugesera Cycling Team, Nkurayija is aiming to lead the federation just six months after being appointed coordinator of Tour du Rwanda. The elections will also determine other members of the federation’s executive committee. For the position of First Vice President, Clément Makuza, backed by Les Amis Sportifs, will face Jean-Bosco Mpatswenumugabo of Cycling Club for All. The race for Second Vice President will feature Gildas Niyonzima of Nyabihu Cycling Team and Ange Belyse Umuhoza, representing Kayonza Young Stars Cycling Team. Incumbent Secretary General Arlette Ruyonza is the only candidate seeking re-election after being nominated by Benediction Cycling Club. Meanwhile, five candidates are contesting for positions on the advisory committee: Florent Nsengumuremyi (formerly of KCC), Christophe René Mupenzi of Karongi Vision Sport Center, Rabbin Hamim Karambizi of Cine Elmay Club, Jean-Bosco Ntembe of Fly Cycling Club, and Jean-Claude Nsengiyumva of Cycling Club for All. The incoming FERWACY president will replace Samson Ndayishimiye, who has led the federation since November 2023. The final list of approved candidates is expected to be published on May 23.
