Volleyball playoffs: REG, APR renew rivalry

National volleyball league defending champions Rwanda Energy Group (REG) will face bitter rivals APR in a highly anticipated duel of this season’s playoffs on Saturday, November 4.

The playoffs will run for two days (Saturday and Sunday), featuring teams that emerged in the top four places during the regular season.

It will be played in a round robin format where the four teams will play against each other. The points each manages to garner out of the games will be added to those it earned during the regular season. The team that ends up with the highest points will be declared champion.

In the men’s category, the first game will be between Gisagara and Police at 11am on Saturday, before REG takes on APR at 1pm.

At 5pm, Gisagara will return to the court to entertain REG, while APR will lock horns with Police.

The regular season ended with Gisagara on top of the table with 35 points, APR second with 35 as well, while REG is third with 32 and Police with 30.

Speaking to Times Sport, REG’s head coach Pierre Marshal Kwizera, expressed the hunger that his team has for the trophy.

"We want to win our matches in the playoffs. It will be very difficult but we have set ourselves a target and I believe we can achieve," he said.

In the women’s category, the four teams that will take part in the playoffs are APR, Ruhango, Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) and Police.

The women’s regular season ended with APR leading with 32 points, three points clear of second-placed RRA.

Police was third with 23 points, while Ruhango was fourth with 10.
