PHOTOS: How Rwandans are turning the hills into their weekend escape

A few years ago, mentioning hiking as a weekend activity in Rwanda would probably have brought to mind foreign tourists heading up mountains with cameras, walking sticks and heavy backpacks. For many Rwandans, hiking was something visitors did while exploring the country’s famous landscapes. That perception is changing. Today, more people are turning to hiking as a refreshing way to spend their weekends. After a busy week, some are choosing to wake up early, put on their hiking shoes, carry water and head into the hills instead of following the usual weekend routine. For them, hiking is about more than just exercise and breaking a sweat. It provides an opportunity to connect with nature, meet new people, enjoy fresh air and take a break from the pressures of everyday life. A growing culture of wellness The rise in hiking reflects a broader shift towards healthier lifestyles. While gyms and fitness centres remain popular, outdoor activities are giving people the chance to combine exercise with adventure and social interaction. “I wanted to find a way to stay active while also doing something fun,” says Denise Uwase, a Kimironko resident who recently started joining hiking trips. “At first, it was challenging because others were more experienced and familiar with the trails in Bumbogo. But my gym training helped me adapt and I soon started enjoying the experience. I met new people, discovered new trails and returned home feeling refreshed and energised.” Rwanda's hills draw more hikers Rwanda's rolling hills, forests and scenic countryside provide trails for hikers of all experience levels. Around Kigali, places such as Mount Kigali, the Akabasaza Hiking Trail, Mwendo Hiking Way and the Bumbogo hills have become popular weekend escapes. Some trails offer short walks close to the city, while others lead hikers through rural communities. At the Akabasaza Hiking Trail, regular hikers say the experience has become about more than exercise. Vincent Munyentwali, a resident of Kabeza, says hiking has helped improve his health. “When I started hiking, my goal was to become more active and manage my weight. Over time, I began to see real changes. I lost a significant amount of weight, became stronger, and gained more energy,” he says. “My sleeping has also improved. After hiking, your body feels tired in a good way and you rest better. It has become something I look forward to every weekend,” he added. ALSO READ: Walking 7,000 steps prevents heart diseases, cancer and diabetes, study finds More than a walk For Jackie Abera, a resident of Nyamirambo, adjusting to early Saturday mornings was the biggest challenge. “Adjusting to early Saturday mornings was my biggest challenge,” Abera says. “Every Saturday, we meet at one of our hikers' homes, park our cars and set off promptly at 6 a.m. for a 17–18 km hike. We return for a good stretch and enjoy the refreshing feeling that comes after a great hike. We choose Saturdays because Sundays are often tricky, especially for churchgoers.” She says hiking with a larger group keeps everyone motivated. “I prefer hiking with many people rather than just a few. If someone is tired or walking behind, others encourage them to continue. Exploring beyond Kigali Rwanda also offers numerous hiking destinations outside the capital. Mount Bisoke is known for its volcanic landscape and Crater Lake, while Mount Karisimbi and Mount Muhabura attract experienced hikers seeking more demanding climbs. ALSO READ: Hiking in Rwanda, a fun activity worth the pain A break from the everyday Beyond the physical benefits, many hikers say the greatest reward is the mental refresh that comes with spending time outdoors. “It gives you time to think and enjoy the moment,” says John Mugisha, a resident of Bumbogo. “You leave the city noise behind for a while.” Social media has further fueled interest by introducing more people to scenic trails around Kigali and across the country. While limited information and the perception that hiking is mainly for tourists still hold some people back, more Rwandans are beginning to embrace the activity. In the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” many are discovering that the hills are not only landscapes to admire, but also places to explore.
