Rwanda start quest for African Sitting Volleyball Championships title with victories

RWANDA national sitting volleyball teams, men and women, started their bid for the 2017 African Championship glory with emphatic wins on Wednesday evening at Amahoro Indoors Stadium.

The 4-day continental showpiece that started Wednesday and will run through September 17 was officially opened by the Minister for Sports and Culture, Julienne Uwacu.

Rwanda women's team outclassed neighbors Democratic Republic of Congo in straight sets 3-0 (25-5, 25-5 and 25-7), while their male counterparts defeated South Africa also in three sets, 25-10, 25-16 and 25-17.

In other matches played on the first day in men’s category, Morocco beat Kenya 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) and Egypt defeated DR Congo by 3-0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-15), while in women's fray, Kenya overcame Egypt in a five-set thriller 3-2 (19-25, 25-13, 25-18, 23-25 and 15-12).

The tournament continues on Thursday with five games including three in the men’s competition and two in the women's, all matches will be hosted at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.

Hosts Rwanda face Egypt at 2pm in women's competition before taking on Morocco in men's tournament at 6pm.

The competition has attracted eleven teams, 7 teams in male category and 4 in women's. The men’s teams have been drawn in 2 groups while female teams are in one group and will play against each other on a round-robin.

Group A in men's tournament includes Kenya, South Africa, Morocco and the hosts Rwanda while Group B comprises DR Congo, Algeria and Egypt. The four women's teams are; Kenya, Egypt, DRC and Rwanda.

The African Sitting Volleyball Championships I Kigali also serves continental qualifiers for the 2018 World Sitting Volleyball Championship to be held in the Netherlands.
