The search for this year’s Kagame Cup host continues as Kenya becomes the latest nation to be approached by Council for East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) to organise the tournament. Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed that CECAFA council has approached them for a possibility of hosting this year’s regional club championship. According to the Nairobi News portal, FKF president Nick Mwendwa is quoted, saying that, “We have been approached by the regional football body, with a view to hosting the annual Kagame Cup tournament in Kenya this year.” Tanzania pulled out of hosting this year’s tournament, citing a busy international calendar, according to Tanzania Football Federation president Jamal Malinzi. CECAFA secretary general Nicholas Musonye had suggested to national associations that the regional competition be held from June 18 to July 2, a period that is not favourable for Tanzanian league champions Yanga FC, who face Algerian side Bejaia on the weekend of June 17-19 in their first Confederation Cup group stage. Last month, Rwandan football governing body, FERWAFA, announced that they will not be position to step in to host the tournament, according to the federation’s acting secretary general, Felicite Rwemalika. editorial@newtimes.co.rw Rwanda hosted the 2013 and 2014 editions respectively, while Tanzania organized last year’s edition which was won by local side, Azam FC, who beat their Kenyan counterparts, Gor Mahia in the final in Dar es Salam.
