Mugisha targets Tour du Rwanda stage win

Following his feat as the best climber in stage two of the 2016 Tour du Rwanda Kigali-Karongi (124.7km), Benediction Club rider Samuel Mugisha has set his target on winning at least one stage in the ongoing competition. Competing in Tour du Rwanda for the first time, the 18-year old led from Muhanga to Rubengera after making a breakaway from peloton and at one time had a lead of 2:47 minutes before a peloton of 20 riders caught him. Despite winning the best climber jersey, the youngster has set himself a higher target and could become the youngest stage winner in the history of Tour du Rwanda. “It’s my first time to compete in Tour du Rwanda and I am pleased with the way I am racing, I feel really confident about my chances of winning a stage this year. I have been improving in every competition and I feel stronger now,” said Mugisha on Tuesday. He added, “I am really happy for winning this award today, I wanted to win the stage but I failed, we are working hard as a team (Benediction Club) to see if we can win something in the Tour. So far it has been good for me and the team.” The Rubavu-born cyclist finished in 28th place with a time of 3h27’12’’ and is in 29th position in general classification with 5h45’53’’, 12 minutes and 27 seconds behind the race leader. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
