Artist Buregeya to hold solo exhibition

Innocent Buregeya is putting final touches on one of the pieces of artwork that will be part of the collection at his solo two-week exhibition starting March 26 at The Office in Kiyovu. It has taken him many months to finish the 25 pieces of artwork he intends to display on D-day. All these are new collections, far divorced from his usual installation arts and acrylic on canvas. This time, Buregeya will experiment with different materials: acrylics, inks and water colours on canvas to create some sublime pieces that he’s set to debut during the exhibition. “The Conscious Mind is about knowing your strength and going ahead to express it through colours,” says Buregeya. He adds that all the pieces are intrinsically detailed, but have some cryptic messages behind them when studied closely. Buregeya has established a reputation for easily working with paints on canvas and his unique installation art, but this new experiment must have produced another side of him that hoists him to be among the most talented, versatile and multifaceted artists in Rwanda. For example, the piece titled ‘The Ocean’ is totally abstract on a 150x120cm canvas. Through the intricate use of colours, he manages to bring to life the turbulent nature of the oceans; how tidal waves can suddenly bring chaos from calm seas. There’s a sea of humanity walking shoulder to shoulder, heading in one direction. All have dark faces, though these faces are illuminated by the bright sky ahead. “This story is about unity and being together through the bittersweet journey of life. I needed to show how unity can have a major positive impact in the advancement of society,” says the artist. Art enthusiasts will also warm up to another piece titled ‘The Mural.’ This is a self-portraiture of himself, and there’s a striking resemblance between the artist and the art. Buregeya explains that this art piece is all about self appreciation, adding that when you look at yourself in another form apart from your human self, you can have a conscious mind of knowing and appreciating the good in you. There are other sublime pieces of artwork that will dazzle attendees. Most of them depict the normal nuances of living in the hustle and bustle of a city like Kigali, where some times mundane things like traffic lights bring movements to a sudden halt.
