EDITORIAL: Rwanda Day: Another opportunity to sell the country to the world

The streets of Amsterdam in The Netherlands are today teeming with thousands of enthusiastic Rwandans and their friends for yet another memorable series of Rwanda Day that has become a permanent feature on the country’ calendar of events. Like previous editions, it will be an occasion for government officials to interact with scores of Rwandans in the Diaspora, exchange ideas on development efforts, but equally importantly, it is a bridge between Rwandan and foreign businesses. Past Rwanda Day events registered resounding successes; many foreign investors got to know the true investment climate in the country and came on board. There is no better occasion to market the country. Tourism and unique Rwandan products; be they handcrafts, coffee, tea or minerals, got the shot they needed in the arm. Many foreign players got to know virgin investment opportunity such as energy, mining and agri-business. Similarly, young Rwandan professionals responded positively to the call to take an active part in their country’s reconstruction. Many have never looked back. To many local entrepreneurs, Rwanda Day is an opportunity to spread their wings and expand their business horizons. Banks have not been left behind. Many opened new avenues for the Diaspora, easing the process of sending remittances that have been a boon to the country’s economy. Real estate developers have also cashed in big on the event with many members of the Diaspora rushing to get a piece of the pie; a home to truly call home.
