I took to the Dictionary to find the definition of the word "gentleman”. As the argument got heated up with my colleagues as to whether Rwandan men are gentlemen or not, I thought that maybe it was I who didn’t know what the word meant. The dictionary defines a gentleman as a man who is ‘respectful and considerate of those around him, acts politely and treats women with respect’. Well, according to what I have witnessed, I have come to the conclusion that Rwandan men are gentlemen. Actually, after seeing the definition, it got me thinking that either the people I was arguing with were either blind or simply unappreciative. Sometimes I love arguing for the sake of arguing but this time around it was because I have met men who have acted like gentlemen to me even if they didn’t know me and most probably will never see me again. Take for instance the day when I planned to travel out of the country. I went to the Nyabugogo Bus Park to wait for the bus. However, while I arrived early for the bus, I was too late to get a seat. I placed my bag down and stood beside it. One gentleman noticed me; he left his seat and asked me to take it. I wanted to carry my luggage as I sat down but he said he would keep an eye on it. Tell me, if that is not being a gentleman, then what is it?Another time I was struggling with a suitcase on the roadside. Out of the blue this young man came and asked, "do you need help with that”? Before I could even answer, the suitcase was on his head and asked me to show him where I am going. When we reached the house, he placed the suitcase down and off he went. Whenever my phone or something else falls and there is a man with me I know I won’t have to bend to pick it up. Some of the men would never let you come behind them when they open the door. Whether they know you or not, they will be polite enough to let you pass before them. I have witnessed three bus conductors help women to enter the buses. Wow! I found that sweet. Okay, what more evidence does there need to be to prove that men are gentlemen? Should they jump off a cliff?
