As they say, the best learning happens during hands-on, real-world experiences. As school children warm up for the lengthy July-September holiday and look forward to having a break from the usual routine and studies, The New Times has listed some fun ways to keep children active and engaged during the holidays.

Kids expo

Children genuinely look forward to school holidays when they expect amazing experiences through interactive and educational activities such as workshops, games, shopping, exploring, dance, and food.

The Spiderman Game Centre, in Masaka, will be the place to go for the kids starting August 26 to September 3.

Kids’ extravaganza

Children between the ages of 6 and 12 are invited to a four-day Bible camp that will be held at Christian Life Assembly (CLA) Church in Nyarutarama. The camp will take place from July 25 to July 28, starting at 7:30 am and finishing at noon.

The camp’s entree fee goes for Rwf15,000 per child. Registration is ongoing after each Sunday service. The deadline for registration is July 16.

Summer camp

A summer camp that entails artistic activities such as painting and swimming lessons has been organised for kids aged 4 to 9 from August 14 to 18 at a fee of Rwf100,000 per child.

The event will take place at Villa Belle Vue, Kibagabaga, starting from 9 am to 12:30 pm.

Summer camp and Akagera National Park trip

The management of Ecole Internationale Kiddie Cloud School, in Kigali, is organising a thrilling two-month summer camp for learners, particularly those between 2 to 13 years of age.

Planned activities include entertainment, games, swimming, and traditional and modern dances, alongside learning and playing musical instruments like guitar and piano. The camp will commence on July 17 to August 25, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm at Rwf100, 000 per child. On the final day, learners will tour Akagera National Park.

Karate, movies, bouncing castle

Isaro Nursery School has organised a summer camp that includes diverse activities like traditional dances, games, and musical instruments like piano, guitar, painting, bouncing castle and trampoline, language lessons, movies, karate, and reading.

This will cater for kids aged 1 to 15 starting July 10, to August 31, from 9 am to 4 pm.

Prices are as follows: a seven-week rate (July 10 to August 31) at Rwf160,000, (July 10 to August 10) at Rwf130,000. One chosen activity goes for Rwf40,000. All prices include lunch.

Dance workshop

Learners are guaranteed to enjoy painting with watercolours and crayons, among other exhilarating activities such as playing musical instruments, creating flower pots, painting t-shirts, dance workshops, and face painting.

This will happen from August 4 to August 5 at Canal Olympia, Rebero.

STEAM Camp

For kids between the ages of 10 to 12 fascinated by STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) using game development, Uvumbuzi Summer Camp offers skills that can be beneficial to future careers.

The camp is expected to engage youngsters through video game development, starting July 17 to August 11, at African Leadership University, in Gasabo district.

Registration is Rwf75,000 and Rwf65,000 for early booking. The cost will cater to technology, a t-shirt, and lunch every day, from Monday to Friday. Events will kick off at 8:00 am to 2:30 pm daily.

Karate lessons

During the holidays, many karate clubs in town will organise special kids’ programmes.

Children can take on a new skill through karate training organised by Rwanda Karate Federation on July 15, starting at 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at Lycee Notre Dame des Anges, in Remera.

The participation fee is Rwf10,000. The training will include activities like Kihon, Kumite for competition, WKF competition rules, and Olympic values for ages 4 to 15.

Reading

Holidays are a good time for kids to read new good books for relaxation while learning at the same time. A trip to Kigali Public Library, or any other kids’ zone with children’s books, with the kids would be fun.

Dance training

Nyamirambo-based Ze Dance Studio has prepared a dance training for kids aged 8 and above, starting Monday to Saturday – for the whole holiday period – from 2:00 pm to 3:30 at a fee of Rwf5,000 per session.
