HUYE — The National University of Rwanda (NUR) has dismissed two students over alleged ethnic divisionism and genocide ideology.

The dismissal of the students followed an investigation into their conduct that implicated them. One of the students disturbed governance at the university while another one promoted genocide ideology among fellow students. The decision was announced last Friday in a statement from the Rector’s office.

"Based on the investigation report of various national security agencies and the recommendation of the Management Committee, the NUR Board of Directors meeting on May 29, 2008 decided to dismiss two students, Mr. Callixte  Nsabimana from the Faculty of Law for his conduct that made the university ungovernable and Mr. Frodouard Mbabajende from the Faculty of Medicine for having propagated and supported genocide ideology,” the statement from the Rector’s office said. It was copied to all NUR staff and students.

The decision comes months after the university suspended guild elections citing ethnic divisionism and genocide ideology.

The statement also warned all the members of the university community, students and staff, to avoid "all forms of divisionism and genocide ideology as well as disturbance of the peace and governance of the university.”

In April this year, the NUR rector, Prof. Silas Lwakabamba, had warned that the university would take serious measures against whoever would be found propagating the genocide ideology on the campus.

Meanwhile, one of the students who were dismissed said that he wanted to see a report that formed the basis of his dismissal.

"I am still thinking about what to do,” said Callixte Nsabimana who was a fourth-year student.

"I have to complain since I believe in the rule of law in the country, but I first need to see the report.” But he said that the report was a fabrication.

"It is just injustice. My heart doesn’t summon me to any mistake so far,” he said on phone. As for Mr. Frodouard Mbabajende, he couldn’t be reached by press time as his phone was off.
