President Paul Kagame, yesterday, joined thousands of youth in the ‘Walk to Remember’ a march organised by Rwandan youth to pay tribute to the over a million Tutsi who were killed in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The Prime Minister, Pierre Damien Habumuremyi, various cabinet Ministers, members of parliament and other senior government officials also participated in the walk.The walk, which started from Parliamentary Buildings in Kimihurura and ended at Amahoro National Stadium, lasted an estimated 30 minutes.Upon arrival at the stadium, President Kagame was joined by the First Lady Jeannette Kagame to light the candles of hope in memory of the victims."As young people, we should be ready to fight against anything that can lead to divisionism among ourselves,” Vanessa Umubyeyi Mupenzi, 18, a Genocide survivor who spoke on behalf of the youth said.Umubyeyi who, in 1994, was one month old, survived the mass killings of Tutsis with her mother.She said all her other close relatives were killed during the Genocide."We are all Rwandans why should we turn against each other? Let’s join hands and build our country instead of destroying it,” Umubyeyi, now a Senior Six Student offering Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology at Lycee’ Notre Dame de Citeaux, noted.According to Abedy Prince Bizimana from Jabba Juniour Foundation, one of the organisers of the Walk, the event, aims at engaging the youth to fight against divisive ideology which can lead to genocide.
