Rwanda U-17 women’s national handball team on Tuesday registered their first victory at the ongoing Zone 5 women&039;s youth and junior tournament of the IHF Trophy Africa after a 52-02 humiliating victory over Djibouti in the opening match held at Benjamin Mkapa Indoor Stadium.

Anaclet Bagirishya’s girls won the first half 23-0 before finishing the business in the second half as they ran away with a 52-02 victory over the minnows.

Rwanda returns to action on Wednesday to take on South Sudan in the second match on April 26. They will wind up the qualifying campaign against hosts Tanzania on April 27.

Eight countries from Eastern Africa — Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Tanzania — are taking place in the regional youth (U17) competition.

They were divided into two groups where Rwanda, Tanzania, Djibouti and South Sudan were pooled in Group A while Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi and Somalia are competing in Group B.

The group stages which run until April 27 will see the two best teams from each group advance to the semi-finals, while the other sides will move to the placement matches 5-8.

The finals and the third-place encounters at the tournament are scheduled for Sunday 30 April.

The Zone 5 women's youth and junior tournament serves as a qualification event for the Continental Phase of the Women's IHF Trophy Africa.
