The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has announced that a budget in excess of Rwf444 million will be spent on various activities during the 2023 season.

The budget was approved during the extraordinary general assembly held over the weekend.

The largest portion of the budget will be used in talent development in different sports disciplines and competitions among others and the committee looks to increase the number of athletes in different Paralympic disciplines.

"This is the budget that we hope will help us this year but we still believe it should be improved,” said NPC president Jean Baptiste Murema.

"A big portion of the budget will be allocated in development programs across the country because we have many sports disciplines with fewer athletes,” he added.

Murema said that NPC plans to discuss with their stakeholders like the Ministry of Sports to see how their contribution to the budget can be improved so it covers the expenses on initiatives designed for the development of Paralympics sports.

"We have a lot of sports disciplines and running them all countrywide requires a big budget which is way bigger than our current financial capabilities. We plan to reproach our partners, especially the Ministry of Sports, to improve their support,” he added.

Rwanda has confirmed its participation at the African Paralympic Games 2023 scheduled from September 3-12 in Accra, Ghana.

The country is expected to be represented in different disciplines namely Amputee football, Goalball, Sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair Tennis, Athletics and Powerlifting.
