Age, gender and size should not be obstacles to achieving a dream.

Sandrine Usenga Murangwa, 23, is a student taking Physical Sports and Education at Kigali Institute of Education (K.I.E).

She used to be an acrobat in primary school but later changed to playing football and basketball when she joined secondary school. She says this was her inspiration to become a gym instructor.

She majored in Maths and Physics while at her final year in secondary school. When she passed highly, she was awarded with a scholarship to study at K.I.E where she is pursuing Physical Sport and Education.

"My mother didn’t welcome the idea at all and even called some of her friends to pray for me,” she said.

When she started working as a gym instructor, in 2009, at Alpha Palace Hotel, her mother became so worried. As time went by, her mother and many other people began to see things differently.

Usenga today is among the few female referees in Rwanda that are recognised internationally. She is currently working at the Fitness Club at Amahoro National Stadium.
