Teacher beaten up by primary kids

GATSIBO - Twelve pupils at Mugera Primary School in Gatsibo District are on the run after allegedly beating up their teacher.

Sources said the Primary Six pupils; all Congolese nationals from Nyabiheke refugee camp, roughed up Emanuel Nsabimana, their Mathematics teacher, and inflicted injuries on his head.

Speaking to The New Times, the school head teacher, Alphonsinse Musanabera confirmed the incident, saying the ring leader had been sent to bring his parents over indiscipline.

"It was on Tuesday morning when we suspended one of the pupils called Mereweneza Mutabazi over indiscipline. We ordered him to go and bring his parents to settle his issues but he instead brought along his classmates and beat their teacher,” she said.

Musanabera, castigated the students over indiscipline.

"Last month we punished a group of Congolese pupils who had threatened to kill their classmates. They made a list of 20 of their classmates whom they targeted to kill,” said head teacher.

In an interview Gatsibo Sector Executive Secretary, Consolee Urujeni said they had called an extra-ordinary meeting between sector authorities, Police, school administration and camp authorities to discuss the issue.

"As we speak now there is a meeting between all concerned parties to find a lasting solution to this issue. The meeting also brings together parents and district education officials,” she said.
