Yesterday Kigali City marked International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrating the achievements of thousands of Rwandan women.

"This is the day to look back on our past achievements and struggles, but more importantly, to look ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future women and girls," said the Mayor of Kigali City, Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kakira.

Guest of honor, Yvonne Uwayisenga, vice president in the chamber of deputies, congratulated women on their support for the development of the country, but also encouraged them not to relax but to double their efforts in order to yield even better results.

Kigali observed the day under this year’s international theme: "Investing in Women and Girls."

Speeches, exhibitions and entertainment marked the occasion in the capital’s commercial center.

Distinguished guests included commissioner general of Rwanda Revenue Authority, Mary Baine, UNIFEM’s Josephine Odera, and the president of the National Council of Women, Odda Gasinzigwa.

Attendees were entertained by local musicians: Dr. Claude, Miss JoJo and Eric, and the MTN group.

Angelique Mukamana, 56, said Rwanda has every reason to celebrate the day, thanks to the Government’s efforts to empower women.

"We are allowed to participate in decision-making and we now compete with men at any level in government."

Rwanda is considered a model of gender equity with the new constitution stipulating that women hold at least 30 per cent of all positions in government and other decision-making positions. IWD has been observed by the United Nations since 1972 and was first adopted in Rwanda in 1975. The day is celebrated on March, 8 of every year across the entire world.
