Volleyball powerhouse Forefront were in the league of their own over the weekend as the club's men and women’s teams were crowned champions of the 2023 Memorial Kayumba tournament that concluded Sunday, March 5, at Groupe Scolaire Officiel de Butare (GSOB) in Huye.
The tournament, which was in its 13th edition, is held annually in memory of late father Emmanuel Kayumba who passed away in 2009.
Kayumba is remembered for his instrumental role in the growth of volleyball among schools, especially at GSOB, during his time as the school headmaster.
Despite making their debut at the tournament, Forefront went on to claim both trophies in men and women categories.
The men’s team beat REG 3-1 to clinch the title. REG started the final brightly, winning the opening set by 26-24, before Forefront fought back to win three consecutive sets with 25-22,25-22 and 25-19.
In the women’s category, Forefront beat Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) 3-2 sets (25-23,24-26, 25-15,13-25 and 16-14) to win the title.
Meanwhile, in the second division, Groupe Scolaire Saint Joseph Kabgayi were crowned champions after beating Nyanza TSS 3-2 in the final game.
