RUSIZI – Nkombo Island was recently connected to the national grid. The Lake Kivu-based Island, located in Rusizi District, was one of the regions marginalised under previous regimes.

Apart from electricity, the government has constructed schools, hospitals and clean water pumps for the area residents.

"Previously, it is like we were not considered as Rwandans,” said one the resident. They vowed to effectively use the latest development initiatives on the Island to change their lives.

The Mayor of Rusizi District, Oscar Nzeyimana, challenged the area to capitalise on the new facilities to develop themselves and the whole area.

"This is not electricity for domestic use only. You can construct factories, get employed and live better lives,” said the Mayor.
