A letter to my Mum

Dear Mum,How are you and father doing? I hope you are fine and doing so great in the village. I heard you do not walk on a wooden stick anymore. Uncle Jonah told me you now walk on a metallic stick, the one they got for you from the city. Congratulations!

Dear Mum,

How are you and father doing? I hope you are fine and doing so great in the village. I heard you do not walk on a wooden stick anymore. Uncle Jonah told me you now walk on a metallic stick, the one they got for you from the city. Congratulations!

Well I write to you informing you about my life in the city and school lately. I have been enjoying the city. School is fine as well.

The city is so beautiful and I got to see many things. Mum, have you ever seen small cars unlike the big buses in the village? I guess not! I saw all that.

The roads are so beautiful with flower gardens planted alongside them. Can you believe there are also small mountains with water rising from the ground in the middle of the city, where cars pass? (He meant a fountain) It’s a beautiful scenery mum.

Talking about school, my first day was amazing, I was welcomed so well when I arrived there. All the students were smiling at me. I loved school even more.

I even got a new name. My classmates nicknamed; they call me "Zonto” I don’t know what it means though, but it sounds nice. You are not talking to Yakobo anymore but refer to me as "Yakobo Zonto”. I miss you mum. I have a lot to tell you.

As for my performance… oh my God I wish you were here to see my report card. I was the best student in first term. My position was amazing. I was the 105th student out of 105 students. All the other 104 students came behind me. Dad will be very proud of meI am proud of myself too, my favorite subject is Mathematics.

I like to add and subtract figures, however I hate division. I love Science too; we learn about animals…oh, this reminds me of the cows at home. I miss grazing cattle in the hills.

The meals at school are so delicious. The "posho” is perfect unlike the one I used to eat at home, the beans are awesome. But my classmates regard it as so local.

They say I am just a village boy used to dirty food like beans. They eat fried, chipped irish potatoes mixed with red liquid from a bottle and say it is classic.

My friend called it tomato sauce. Amongst all, before I forget to ask you, do you know "Facebook” mum? This is where I hate school. Often my classmates ask me if I am on "Facebook” and I tell them I am on "Headbook” just to shun off my naivety. They laugh at me because I don’t know what it is.

Actually they say I don’t know how to use a T.V, to write and send messages, they are weird, and they call the T.V names like computer. Mum this is why I hate school.

Last but not least they called me "early man” because they think I am from deep down in the village.
In fact I am writing this letter under my class desk so they don’t find out I still write letters instead of using the TV to send messages; if they found out, they would laugh so hard at me. Otherwise despite the difficulties I am enjoying the city.

I finish by saying I miss you and love you so much. I wait for your reply anxiously, greetings to my lovely sister, Beatrice.

I remain your son,
Yakobo Zonto
