When children are growing, the parent-child relationship is shaped. During the toddler stage, the primary function of the parent-child relationship is nurture. However, as children grow older more conflicts of interest arise at the adolescent age because parents may push the child too hard while the child may feel the urge to purposely defy the parents hence misunderstandings.
Problems arise between the parents and child when they fail to get a way of dealing with these conflicts thus a gap is created. Teens use strategies such as being rebellious and breaking the rules.
As the fifth commandment states: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.” Therefore regardless of one’s age it’s important to respect our parents and above all make them our best friends. When there is good communication between a parent and child, there are no secrets involved.

The relationship between parents and children is remarkably improved when there is productive communication. Children learn how to communicate by observing their parents. If parents communicate openly and effectively, chances are that the children will do the same.
