The men’s national volleyball team campaign for Africa’s lone slot at this year’s Olympic Games in Beijing, China hit a dead end when the team got disgraced in Durban, South Africa.

Seeded in a fairly strong pool alongside Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa, Rwanda finished last with four points after failing to win a single game.

Cameroon and Algeria pulled off straight set victories over Rwanda while Nigeria and hosts South Africa settled for 3-1 victories over the East Africans.

Algeria and Egypt matched into the semi-finals on Thursday after topping their pools. Cameroon and Tunisia also booked their semi-final berth after finishing second.

By press time, the African champion and pre-tournament favorite Egypt was taking on Cameroon in the first semi-final game while Algeria was destined to clash with Tunisia later in the day.

At the end of the day, the champions of this competition will secure African Vacancy at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
