HUYE - Over 2000 ex-combatants are set to enrol for vocational training, an official from the Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) has said.

Major General Paul Rwarakabije, an RDRC Commissioner, made the announcement during an exercise to select beneficiaries in Huye District.

81 ex-combatants were selected from Huye, with all women qualifying automatically, Rwarakabije said.
Those selected are grouped according to their field of specialisation, and given a monthly stipend to facilitate their training.

During the same event, ex-combatants who completed vocational training were given various equipment to kick-start their projects.

Arthur Nshimyimana, 40, completed training in electrical installation in 2008, but could not work due to lack of basic equipment. After receiving the tools, he said he was going to specialise in being an electrician. 

"I am grateful to the Commission for providing me with all the equipment I need in my work. I am now ready to practice what I learnt at school,” he said. Rwarakabije pointed out that the training exercise has been a success.

"We have made good progress since the start of the training programme,” he said. "Those who received vocational training have gone on to lead decent lives as a result of the skills attained.”
