Kirehe-Kayonza - Two people including a teacher were this week arrested for alleged defilement of students in Kayonza and Kirehe districts.

Police say that they arrested Ali Ziwa Shaban, the headteacher of Kayonza Vocational School and he is being held at Nyakarambi Police for allegedly luring a student into a hotel and having sex with the student.

Security sources say Shaban was caught red-handed with a female student at Amarembo Hotel, Rusumo in Kirehe district.

Security officials added that the head teacher argued, prior to his arrest that the student, Pelagia Nyinawumuntu, was not a minor and that was the reason he had lured her to the hotel, although police could not ascertain her age upon arrest.

In response, police argued that the teacher’s conduct was unprofessional. "The student may not be a minor, but the action of the headteacher is considered to have been unprofessional,” police said.

The second suspect, Mahoro Bucyayungura, alias Mohamed, a businessman in Kirehe district was also caught red-handed defiling a 17-year old girl in his house.
Commenting on the cases, the Mayor of Kirehe district Protais Murayira, said he was shocked by the conduct of these officials.

He appealed to hotel proprietors to be more vigilant on the nature of persons seeking accommodation within their outlets.

"I advise, and at the same time warn the public and hotel owners that they will be held accountable for the crimes committed in their hotels,” he said.

"Amarembo Hotel is strategically located at the Tanzania-Rwanda border to facilitate travelers. I am disappointed that it is used to spoil school going teenagers.”

Both suspects are currently held at Nyakarambi Police station, in Kirehe district pending investigations.
