NYAGATARE - Nyagatare district plans to give cash prizes to primary schools that excel in environmental protection.
According to Martin Hitimana, district director of education, the move is in line with the district’s dream of attaining environmental excellence.

"We want our district to be environmentally friendly, and this will start from the lowest classes in the schools,” he said, adding that the awards will be given after a competition that he deemed likely to be very tough.

According to Hitimana, the best school, overall, selected in the district will scoop an award worth Rwf300,000.

"We shall launch the competition on October 2. Among the judgment criteria is the lookout for general cleanliness within shortlisted schools. We shall also look at how schools have embraced the concept of tree planting, alongside with other criteria,” he said.

He added that the selection of pre-qualified schools will start at sector level before moving upward to determine the three best schools district-wide.
