KIGALI - Two civilian men on Monday attacked and robbed a Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) soldier of Frw1 million in Kanombe, a Kigali city suburb.

Sergeant Emmanuel Mutangana was waylaid by the two robbers as he returned from CSS Bank where he had withdrawn the money on Monday afternoon. The money was part of a loan Mutangana had secured to buy a piece of land.

According to eyewitnesses, the robbers who were dressed in casual attire, unleashed a flurry of punches on Mutangana before taking off with his handbag, which contained the money.

One of the witnesses, Jean Claude Mugema said he saw the suspected robbers closing in on Mutangana and shortly heard him screaming out for help.

"I ran towards the scene to help and found a man lying down,” he said, adding that if the police arrested the suspects he would easily identify them.

Mutangana who bled profusely from the nose and mouth was later admitted at Kanombe Military Hospital. He was discharged on Tuesday. Mutangana returned from Khartoum a month ago after completing his service mandate with African Union Mission in Sudan (Amis).
