KARONGI/RUTSIRO - A total of 593 classroom blocks are set to be constructed in the western province, under the 9-year Basic Education Programme this year.

Rusizi district stands with the highest number where 113 will be built, followed by Nyamsheke which has 91 while Nyabihu and Ngororero have 90 and 84 respectively.

Rubavu district follows closely with 83 classrooms; Rutsiro has 78 while Karongi
plans to construct 54 classrooms.

Jessicca Mbabazi, the official in charge of the program at the province
explained that the total number of classrooms originally expected was higher but it had to be scaled down.

Emerence Ayinkamiye, the district education director of Rutsiro told The New
Times on Tuesday that construction work had started on most of the sites.

She expressed confidence and optimism that all the classrooms would be
complete on time.

"We have started work in almost all the schools and we are certain to complete
the construction on time for the students not to be inconvenienced,” she said.
