KARONGI - Sector leaders in Karongi district will this year put more effort in modern agriculture to foster economic development.

The leaders were presenting this year’s performance contracts before residents, on Monday.

Other priorities include mobilizing residents to join the sector savings and credit cooperatives (Umurenge Sacco), and building more classrooms for the 9-year Basic Education programme.

The function was also used to celebrate several achievements. Last year’s evaluation report put Rugabano sector ahead of all the others with a comfortable 91.4%, while Gashari was ranked as the worst performer at 70%.

Rugabano emerged the best due to tremendous achievements in the agriculture and health sectors, where most of their previous projections were achieved.

In an interview with The New Times, Rugabano’s Executive Secretary, Cyriaque Niyonsaba, attributed his success to cooperation and hard work among the sector leaders.
He said, "there was significant contributions by all local leaders in ensuring that we achieve what we got. Each of them played a big role by fostering cooperation to make sure that we met all our targets.”

Niyonsaba revealed they have a new initiative where public servants through an association at the sector level, donate two cows every month to poor residents.

Paul Jabo, the Western Province Executive Secretary, challenged all local leaders to apply more effort in order to portray the best image of the province.
