KAMONYI – Residents of Mpushi, Kamonyi district have formed an education fund to promote the education of children in the area.

The Mpushi Alumni Association Education Fund also known as ‘Garuka Ushime,’ was announced on June 5, during the commissioning of seven classroom blocks meant for the Nine Year basic Education (9YBE) program at Groupe Scolaire St. Francis of Assisi Mpushi, in Musambira sector.

The district education officer, Fidèle Uwamahoro, commissioned the buildings worth Rwf36million, which were constructed with the support from German residents of the Rheineland province.

The Fund formed by residents and former students in the area would be charged with overseeing the development of education standards in the area. 

Venuste Semigabo, a representative of Mpushi parents, remarked that the event was historical and marked the beginning of a new trend in the education of Mpushi children.

"This is the first time that residents and former students meet as one community to affirm their commitment to contribute to the education of their children. The established Alumni fund will contribute to the growth of the school and improve the education of our children,” Semigabo said.

The school’s head teacher, Cyprien Munyakarama, said that the school has drawn a Rwf100 m budget and expected the Alumini fund to cover part of this budget.

He said: "Part of the budget will be used in renovation of buildings. We also intend to construct a girl child care center while planning for other facilities such as purchase of assorted equipment.”

Etaime Mudaheranwa, a representative of former students, urged his colleagues to use their knowledge and capabilities to promote the standards of Mpushi education.

The event attracted various donors, including the Catholic Church which has supported the school since its establishment in 1942.

The function was also marked with celebrations marking 68 years of the school’s existence.

Over 100 teachers, who have taught in the school, were also recognized and donors were also rewarded for their support to the school.
