Five players from the Burundi national football team at the on-going U-17 Cecafa youth championships have been disqualified on grounds of over age.

Amrani Ndikumana, Etienne Kerekezi, Gael Duhayindavyi, Nassor Irakoze and Djumainne Nzomukunda will have no further part at the competition after being ruled out by the tournament organizers; Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa).

The Ferwafa Chief Executive Officer, Jules Kalisa informed Times Sport that these players were disqualified because they were born before 1991 which is the plat-form birth year for the tournament.

"We (Ferwafa) were sent a circular on the age requirements for the tournament and that’s why we took enough time to select players who fall within the required age bracket in order to avoid such mishaps,” Kalisa said, adding that no Rwandan player has been associated with over-age.

Burundi has however, been allowed to replace the disqualified player with those who fall within the set age bracket.

Meanwhile, Uganda started its campaign in fine style, walloping Kenya 5-1 on on Tuesday and return to action this afternoon against Zanzibar looking for a place in the semifinals.
