Kanyanga dealers arrested on X-mas

EASTERN PROVINCE Nyagatare — Police arrested twenty people on Christmas in connection with illegal selling of local brew (Kanyanga) in Karangazi.

Nyagatare — Police arrested twenty people on Christmas in connection with illegal selling of local brew (Kanyanga) in Karangazi.

According to senior police officials who launched the operation said that the police is determined to wipe out the local brew commonly known as Kanyanga which is being categorized among the prohibited drugs in the national panel code.

Among the suspects arrested include nine women who were in possession of Kanyanga in their houses those are; Alphonsine Uwizeyimana, Mary Kantengwa, and Beatrice Mureketete, Odetta Mukajana,Chantal Mbabazi, Donatha Uwimana, Epiphania Mukantulo and Scovia who managed to escape.

Others Everest Sibomana, Antoine Rudasingwa, Bagamba, Gatete, Tito Gatare, Kijuala, Gilbert Ndayambaje, Magiri, meanwhile during the operation in the search of Kanyanga Emmille Niyitegeka and James Bogire were found in possession of marijuana.

"I had no choice after my husband deserted me with two young children, can you imagine he left me with no land so the only choice which was available for me was to deal in local brew just for survival,” Donatha Uwimana, one of the detained suspects said.

Police impounded 222 liters of Kanyanga including the brands of chief waragi and the new brand identified as UNBS with 95%volume of alcohol content.

The chief inspector of Police Damien Gasana confirmed the arrest of Kanyanga dealers.

Police sources say that the operation will continue till the end of the year.
