KARONGI – Two people in Karongi district were on Tuesday acquitted of genocide charges by Gacaca court amid overwhelming joy. 50-year old Liandre Niyonsanga had been in jail for nine months while Alphonsine Mukamazimpaka, 49, had been behind bars for 4 months before their acquittal.

Tears of joy overpowered emotional residents as Leonard Nsanzitwari, the presiding judge read out the verdict.
"I am happy that finally justice has prevailed. Some sections of people were against me because I pinned their relatives for crimes they committed during the genocide,” Mukamazimpaka told The New Times shortly after securing her freedom.
She added that there were so many other victims of the genocide whose bodies have never been recovered and she vowed to give information to ensure that those she saw committing crimes are punished.
Similarly, Niyonsanga, a former mechanic expressed joy upon being set free.
