MUHANGA – Over 4,000 residents of Muhanga district yesterday sat for provisional driving test permits held at Gitarama stadium, according to police sources.

The District Police Commander, Supt. Desire Tuyizere, said, "The process has attracted many residents and it has been successful.”

The Police boss who first briefed the candidates opened the box containing examination papers at 11.00 am.
Most residents preferred to do the test in Kinyarwanda and a few in English and French.

There was commotion as rumour spread that one needed to have a photocopy of identity card before sitting for the examination.

The rumour caused delays as many residents spent time searching for photocopiers all over the town, until police said it was not part of the requirements.

Most participants referred to the event as their ‘New Year’s gift.’  "This is like a gift from Government , after a long time of struggling to get permits, we are happy that the government is ready open up the process to all nationals,” one resident said.

The registered residents were required to pay Rwf 5,000 for the test. Subsequently, long queues formed at the Ecobank and Rwanda Revenue Authority premises for people paying the test fees.
