SIX-TIME national league champions Rayon Sport reached the quarterfinals of this year’s MTN Peace Cup competition after a 4-0 win over Marines yesterday at the Regional stadium, Nyamirambo.

The Blues under interim coach Emmanuel Ruremesha got their goals through Yusuf Ndayishimiye and Aphrodis Hategikimana. Former Kiyovu and Atraco striker Theoneste Muhayimana netted a brace.

Ruremesha crossed from rivals Atraco where he was assistant to Uganda-born Sam Timbe to come and replace Jean Baptist Kayiranga, who resigned after a run of poor results for the country’s most supported club.

In other matches played, Jean Marie Ntagwabira’s side Kiyovu also booked their place in the quarter finals after a 2-1 win over Musanze at Kicukiro artificial turf. Idebrand Nshuti and Eric Serugaba scored crucial goals for the Green and White outfit.

Elsewhere, league highfliers Etincelles played a 2-all draw against Amagaju and went on to win 3-0 on penalties at Mumena stadium.

As a reward for the progress, Rayon will face traditional rivals Kiyovu in the quarter-final stage while Etincelles will face the winner between Atraco and second division outfit Pepiniere.

Meanwhile, MTN Peace Cup action continues this afternoon with holders Atraco playing against Pepiniere at Ferwafa, while last year’s finalists Mukura take on Huye rivals the National University of Rwanda (UNR) at Kamena.

Primus League leaders APR host second division side ISAE, Police entertain AS Kigali while Electrogaz play second division side Muhanga.

Last year, Atraco pocketed Rwf10m after winning the event. Mukura, APR and Rayon pocketed Rwf7m, Rwf4m and Rwf2.5m respectively after finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

The winner of the annual knockout competition earns the right to represent the country in the Africa Confederation Cup.
