The ongoing Nyabisindu Rehousing Project in Gasabo District is one of the initiatives that have been introduced to address housing shortage in the City of Kigali. The 1,600-unit project promises to transform what used to be an informal settlement into a decent village. ALSO READ: Kigali City banks on ‘rehousing model’ to reduce unplanned settlements A similar rehousing model, in which property and land owners get units in when the project is completed, has been implemented in in Mpazi, where hundreds of families have been settled. Nyabisindu project design and construction of will cost Rwf62.9 billion, According to the Ministry of Infrastructure. So far, Rwf28.5 billion has been spent. The initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA) and the City of Kigali. It will deliver a total of 1,639 housing units across 58 housing blocks. It also has a school, a market, a football pitch, green spaces and roads. The development also incorporates a rent-to-own affordable housing scheme. The project currently employs about 2,100 workers.
