Genocide commemorated in New York

NEW YORK - THE Permanent Mission of Rwanda at the United Nations and UN department of Information, held a joint 16th commemoration event of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi at the United Nations Headquarters.

The commemoration was held in three parts and in two separate locations.

The one at the UN headquarters was presided over by the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Rose Migiro, and was attended by a large number of diplomats representing countries from all over the world.

Survivors of the Genocide commemorated the day at UN Church Centre where they revisited Rwandan culture and gave testimonies of their experiences during the Genocide.

Eugene Gasana, Rwanda’s Ambassador to New York, took part in a video conference that was held the following day.

It was attended by students from New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Mexico, Gacaca officials from Rwanda, Unity and Reconciliation Commission, as well as the ICTR which was represented by its spokesperson,. Roland Amoussouga.

At the conference, Ambassador Gasana moderated the discussions and students raised many questions that were answered by Yvette Rugasaguhunga, a survivor, Rwandan officials and Amoussouga.
