Former cyclist Jean-Hubert Nkurayija Ishimwe has been elected president of the Rwanda Cycling Federation, succeeding Samson Ndayishimiye, who opted not to seek another term.

Nkurayija will lead the federation’s newly elected executive committee for the next four years following elections held during FERWACY’s General Assembly on Sunday, May 31.

The former rider, who has served as Tour du Rwanda coordinator since December 2025, secured a commanding victory, receiving 10 of the 11 votes cast.

His path to the presidency was cleared after potential challenger Toussaint Paul Nosisi Gahitsi withdrew from the race.

Gahitsi’s withdrawal came after his nominating club, Les Amis Sportifs, decided to field a candidate for the position of First Vice President instead. The club ultimately chose to maintain only one candidate in the executive elections, leaving Nkurayija unopposed for the federation’s top post.

The new executive committee also includes Clément Makuza, who was elected First Vice President with nine votes, and Belyse Umuhoza, who secured the position of Second Vice President with eight votes.

Meanwhile, Arlette Ruyonza was unanimously elected Secretary General, receiving all 11 votes, while Daniel Katabarwa was also elected Treasurer with unanimous support.
