Francis Haringingo and his Rayon Sports side will be desperate to put their Peace Cup final heartbreak behind them as they continue the fight for a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

The Blues missed the chance to qualify automatically for the continental competition after losing to APR FC in the Peace Cup final over the weekend.

Rayon must now win their remaining two BK Pro League matches against Bugesera FC and Kiyovu SC to secure qualification.

Rayon Sports will host Bugesera FC at Kigali Pele Stadium on Tuesday before concluding their season on Friday, May 29, against rivals Kiyovu SC, who are also battling for continental football.

Rayon currently sit fourth on the table with 52 points from 32 matches, level with fifth-placed Kiyovu, who have played one game more.

Pressure is mounting on Haringingo, with a second-place finish now representing Rayon’s only realistic route to the CAF Confederation Cup.

"A loss in a cup final can either break a team or sharpen it,” Haringingo said after Saturday’s defeat.

"For us, this match is about mentality — responding positively and proving we can still compete at the highest level.”

Ahead of the crucial clash against Bugesera, the Burundian tactician also warned his players against complacency.

"Bugesera are disciplined and unpredictable,” he said.

"They don’t desperately need the points, which allows them to play freely — and that’s often when teams are most dangerous.”

Etincelles battle for survival

At the other end of the table, Etincelles FC face Gorilla FC in a match that could define their season.

The Rubavu-based side sit 16th with 31 points, just above the relegation zone, and can no longer afford mistakes.

"We know what is at stake. We must fight for our lives,” said Etincelles coach Abdu Beken Bizimana.

Victory over 12th-placed Gorilla FC would lift Etincelles to 14th place ahead of AS Kigali and Amagaju FC, who currently occupy 15th and 14th positions respectively.

However, Bizimana faces a difficult task against a Gorilla side that thrashed Etincelles 6-1 in the Peace Cup third-place playoff on Friday. Gorilla FC, currently 12th with 37 points, are also seeking at least a point to ease lingering relegation fears.

"For us, this match is about finishing the job early,” said Gorilla FC coach Alain Kirasa.

"A win here creates breathing space and removes any late-season pressure.”

What’s at stake?

With continental qualification battles at the top of the table and relegation fears at the bottom, Tuesday’s fixtures highlight the growing drama in the BK Pro League run-in.

In the race for the Confederation Cup spot, Rayon Sports and Kiyovu SC are level on 52 points. Kiyovu boast a superior goal difference of 13 compared to Rayon’s 8, but Rayon currently hold the advantage on head-to-head record after winning the first meeting 2-0 ahead of Friday’s decisive return fixture.

A victory over Bugesera FC on Tuesday would leave Rayon needing only a draw against Kiyovu — or avoiding defeat by more than three goals — to secure second place.

In the relegation battle, Mukura VS await Amagaju FC in the final match of the campaign, with a single point enough to guarantee Amagaju’s survival.

Meanwhile, lower-ranked sides will likely need victories to stay up. If Etincelles, AS Kigali and Amagaju all win their remaining matches, both AS Muhanga and Rutsiro FC would be relegated.

AS Kigali could also face relegation if they lose to Musanze FC and both Rutsiro FC and Etincelles win their respective fixtures.
