Kigali has increasingly established itself as a hub for contemporary art, and among its standout spaces is Choose Kigali Art Gallery—a premier, multi-level gallery showcasing contemporary and classic paintings, sculptures, and site-specific installations, primarily by Rwandan artists.

Located in Kiyovu, the gallery was founded by Emmanuel Nkuranga, a self-taught painter and mixed-media expressionist. It serves as a vibrant creative space that presents innovative works transcending traditional artistic forms.

Through his work, Nkuranga has established himself as a leading figure in Rwanda’s growing creative industry. After completing a diploma in Computer Studies at the former Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) in 2009, he discovered his passion for art and has since built a distinctive career.

As a venue dedicated to elevating Africa’s cultural landscape, Choose Kigali Art Gallery provides a platform for artists who challenge conventional norms. The gallery features four floors of rotating exhibitions, alongside expansive artistic gardens and tiered spaces offering scenic city views. These areas often host high-profile events and private gatherings, with guided tours available to help visitors understand the stories behind the artwork.

Choose Kigali Art Gallery is offering not just visual experiences, but a deeper exploration of identity, nature, and human connection.

Visitors can experience a diverse range of creations—from works inspired by Rwanda’s gorillas to pieces made from recycled technological materials, unique stones, and even vintage cars transformed into striking installations. Ocean-inspired visuals and experimental mixed-media works further enrich the experience.

According to Nkuranga, his artistic philosophy explores the deep connection between art, nature, and human consciousness.

"Beyond conventional artistic boundaries, my approach blends creativity with spiritual awareness and personal transformation,” he said. "Through my art, I channel energy and inspiration, aiming to spark positive change in individuals and communities alike.”

A distinctive element of his work is the use of natural minerals, particularly amethyst, known for its association with healing and intuition.

The gallery has also embraced digital transformation, integrating online platforms alongside physical exhibitions to reach a broader audience. Its high-quality curation positions it well to attract contemporary collectors who value both artistic and philosophical depth.

Looking ahead, the gallery envisions a future shaped by more inclusive and community-based art practices.

The gallery is offering not just visual experiences, but a deeper exploration of identity, nature, and human connection.

"Galleries are expected to embrace both online and in-person exhibitions, reflecting a blend of technology and tradition,” the administration noted.

Art with a mission

Beyond his personal work, Nkuranga is a co-founder of Art with a Mission, an initiative that provides creative opportunities to vulnerable children across Africa.

The gallery was founded by Emmanuel Nkuranga, a self-taught painter and mixed-media expressionist.

Through weekly workshops, the program nurtures artistic talent among children aged 3 to 17. Their works are later sold at the AWAM showroom within the gallery, with proceeds supporting school fees and livelihoods. A portion of all Choose Kigali sales also contributes to art supplies and logistical support for the initiative.

Nkuranga’s work has gained international recognition, with features in major outlets such as Vogue, CNN, The New York Times, Wired, and National Geographic. He has exhibited globally and served as a guest artist and lecturer at institutions including Michigan State University, the University of Virginia, and the University of Scranton.

Through its exhibitions and community initiatives, Choose Kigali Art Gallery continues to redefine the role of art in Rwanda.

He was also featured alongside President Paul Kagame and journalist Peter Greenberg in the documentary The Royal Tour: Rwanda.
