Sustaining the momentum of women’s empowerment for a stronger Rwanda
Saturday, April 04, 2026

As Rwanda joined the global community on March 8, 2026, to commemorate International Women’s Day, the country embarked on a month-long celebration dedicated to recognizing progress, strengthening partnerships, and reaffirming our national commitment to gender equality. Observed under the national theme "Empowered Women, Stronger Nation / Umugore ni uw’agaciro,” and aligned with the global theme "Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls,” women’s month provided an opportunity to reflect on achievements while charting the path forward for sustained empowerment.

Throughout March, activities held across the country illustrated Rwanda’s continued determination to ensure that women and girls play a central role in national development. Community engagements, local leaders’ dialogues, mentorship sessions, sports activities, and awareness campaigns brought together women, men, and youth in a shared commitment to inclusive growth. These initiatives highlighted not only the progress achieved but also the collective responsibility to maintain the momentum toward equality.

The strong participation of citizens in community events demonstrated the importance of inclusive engagement. During Car Free Day in Kigali, women, men, and youth gathered in solidarity, emphasizing the role of sports in building confidence and encouraging women’s participation in leadership and development initiatives. Such platforms reinforce the understanding that empowerment begins within communities, where equal opportunities foster both individual growth and national transformation.

Across the country, Members of Parliament and local leaders engaged directly with communities, promoting peaceful family relations, shared responsibilities between men and women, and the empowerment of girls. Outreach activities in schools encouraged young people to adopt responsible behaviors and contribute positively to society. These conversations underscored that gender equality is strengthened when families, communities, and institutions work together toward common goals.

Women’s Month also highlighted the critical role of mentorship and intergenerational dialogue. Women leaders from diverse sectors came together with youth to exchange experiences, identify challenges, and explore strategies for strengthening leadership among women and girls. These engagements addressed key issues such as preventing gender-based violence, reducing teenage pregnancy, tackling child stunting, and promoting community wellbeing. Recognizing outstanding women from different districts further emphasized the importance of role models in inspiring future generations.

Development partners, civil society, and the private sector played a great role in supporting these initiatives through programs promoting women’s economic empowerment, legal awareness, and gender-responsive development. Partners helped expand opportunities for women across sectors. community-based solutions, including clean cooking technologies and livelihood initiatives, demonstrated how empowering women can simultaneously improve health outcomes, reduce unpaid care work, and protect the environment.

Grassroots initiatives remained central to the celebrations. Community dialogues held nationwide encouraged citizens to reflect on progress and identify practical actions to further empower women and girls. In the Southern Province, Family and Gender Equality Week emphasized harmonious families and shared responsibilities. Meanwhile, in all districts, couples living in informal unions had their marriages legalized, strengthening legal protection for women and children and promoting stable families as a foundation for sustainable development.

On behalf of the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, I extend sincere appreciation to all partners who contributed to the successful commemoration of Women’s Month across the country. Government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, the private sector, community leaders, and citizens demonstrated remarkable collaboration and commitment. Their support continues to accelerate efforts to empower women and advance gender equality.

The active involvement of women and youth throughout the month was particularly encouraging. Young people embraced mentorship opportunities, participated in community initiatives, and contributed innovative ideas to strengthen equality. Their engagement signals a promising future where gender equality is sustained by a new generation committed to inclusive development.

As we move forward, our vision remains clear: Rwanda will continue to prioritize women’s economic empowerment, promote leadership opportunities for women and girls, prevent gender-based violence, strengthen families, and ensure equal participation in all sectors of development. Sustaining gender equality requires continuous effort, collective responsibility, and partnerships that translate commitments into tangible results.

The celebrations of Women’s Month 2026 have once again demonstrated that empowering women strengthens families, communities, and the Nation. Let us build on this momentum and continue working together to ensure that every woman and girl in Rwanda has the opportunity to thrive, lead, and contribute fully to our country’s transformation.
