Heavy rains, strong winds forecast in April

Rwanda is expected to experience a mix of slightly above-normal amounts of rainfall, warm temperatures and moderate to strong winds during April, according to forecasts by Rwanda Meteorology Agency announced on Tuesday, March 31.

Rainfall across the country will range between 100mm and 320mm, slightly higher than the usual levels for the month. The first 10 days of April are expected to receive more rain than normal, while the rest of the month will see near-normal conditions.

Western districts to receive highest rainfall

The heaviest rains, between 300mm and 320mm, are expected in some parts of Nyaruguru, Nyamagabe, Karongi, and Rutsiro districts, as well as parts of Rusizi and Nyamasheke districts.

Rainfall ranging from 250mm to 300mm is likely in other areas of the Western and Southern provinces, including parts of Ngororero, Nyabihu, Musanze, Burera, Muhanga, Gakenke, Huye, and Gisagara.

Meanwhile, Kigali and many other parts of the country are expected to receive between 200mm and 250mm of rainfall. Lower amounts, between 150mm and 200mm, are forecast in most parts of Eastern Province, with some parts of Nyagatare, Gatsibo, and Kayonza likely to receive as little as 100mm to 150mm.

Warm days, cool nights expected

Daytime temperatures will range between 20°C and 29°C.

The hottest conditions, reaching up to 29°C, are expected in Kigali, most parts of Eastern Province, the Amayaga region, and the Bugarama plain.

Cooler daytime temperatures, between 20°C and 22°C, are expected in parts of Nyabihu, Musanze, Ngororero, Burera, Nyamagabe, and Nyaruguru, as well as parts of Rusizi, Nyamasheke, Rutsiro, and Rubavu.

At night, temperatures are expected to drop to between 10°C and 12°C in several parts of Northern and Western provinces, including Burera, Musanze, Gakenke, Rulindo, Rubavu, Ngororero, Rutsiro, Nyamagabe, and Nyaruguru.

Warmer nights, ranging between 16°C and 19°C, are expected in Kigali and parts of Eastern Province, including areas in Kayonza, Gatsibo, Nyagatare, and Kirehe, as well as Bugarama plain.

Strong winds expected in several areas

Winds ranging between 4 and 12 metres per second are expected across the country.

Stronger winds are likely in parts of Rubavu, Rutsiro, Karongi, Gatsibo, and Nyagatare, as well as in parts of Nyabihu, Ngororero, Rusizi, Huye, Nyanza, Nyamagabe, Muhanga, Gakenke, Rwamagana, Bugesera, Kirehe, Kamonyi, Musanze, Burera, Gicumbi, and Ngoma.

Other areas, including Kigali, are expected to experience moderate winds.
