Uganda to host 2008 Cecafa Challenge Cup

Uganda has been the given right to host the 2008 edition of the GTV Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup tournament.

East African Community and Cecafa member state, Uganda was given the rights to host the 2008 edition during the Cecafa congress held last Friday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Ferwafa Chief Executive Officer, Jules Kalisa who attended the congress told Times Sport over the weekend that Uganda will host the Cecafa Challenge Cup in some of the key resolutions passed during the congress.

"We supported Uganda to host next year’s edition. This was Uganda’s chance and we supported them.

"With Uganda hosting next year’s edition of the Cecafa tournament, Kenya will host the 2009 edition while Burundi will host the Kagame Club Cup the same year,” Kalisa.

Zanzibar was appointed as standby hosts in case Kenya fails to host the 2009 edition of the Cecafa challenge Cup and Eritrea was also named to be on standby to host the Kagame Cup in case Burundi fails to host it.

Other resolution passed saw Eritrea being awarded next year’s U-20 tournament with Tanzania as standby hosts while Zanzibar will look at the possibility of hosting the women’s tournament.

Sudan confirmed its readiness to host next year Club Cup between March and June so as to give way to CAF tournaments.

Meanwhile, elected Cecafa president, Leodegar Tenga of the Tanzania Football Federation president who beat Ethiopian counterpart Ashebir WoldeGiorgis 8-3 at elections replaced Uganda’s Dennis Obua who stepped down after serving one term.

Tenga nominated Somalia football association president, Fadoul Asaph as his deputy.

Somalia FA Secretary General Abdighani Said Arab led the race for the executive seats with 10 votes followed by Uganda’s Justus Mugisha with eight and Lydia Nsekera (Burundi) and Fadoul Hussein of Eritrea with seven each.

The president will serve for four years while the deputy and the other committee members will serve for two years each.
