PARENTING : The woes of parenting

PARENTING today is much more difficult than it was a generation ago. Many parents are still using the outdated parenting styles.

They don’t seem to work well with today’s generation, and that explains why some mums and dads experience frustration and stress on a daily basis.

But does good parenting really exist? We might say it does exist, but unfortunately it does not. One weakness that we normally have as mothers is using disciplinary methods that deliver inconsistent results because we fail to teach kids how to learn from their mistakes.

I have realized that many forms of discipline and punishment actually lead to worse behavior. Children only learn not to get caught next time.

I believe that good parenting is all about bringing the very best in your child using methods that teach them respectfulness, responsibility and compassion.

One of the barriers to good parenting is living with a mother who is unhappy, exhausted and stressed. But one thing we should remember, is that our children will flourish when they grow up in a happy family.

I hear many mums whine, "but I don’t have time!” Time moves so fast that you never have enough of it.

Stop running for material things, your children are your first asset. All we need to do as mothers is to make wise decisions and choices that put our children’s priorities first.

We have all heard about past generation parenting, but have we ever noticed that there is a spoilt generation on the rise?

This is because we raise our children to believe they own it all; there is an unhealthy sense of entitlement.

No matter what your situation is and how much your children drive you crazy, know that there are thousands of women who would in a heartbeat gladly trade places with you. Mothers should strive to remember how truly fortunate they are.

Families can work together, live happily together and have fun at the same time. This doesn’t mean children won’t disrespect you but when they do, there is no need to turn your home into a battlefield.

It’s inevitable to avoid bad days but, like any other good parent, we must be ready to face our challenges. It’s only when we keep trying hard that we are able to help our children.
