Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Tuesday, March 3, were awarded United Nations medals in recognition of their contribution to peacekeeping efforts.

During the ceremony held at the UN Tomping Compound in Juba, South Sudan’s capital, the Rwandan battalion (Rwanbatt-1) performed a a military parade and showcased both their discipline and Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage,

The event was presided over by Maj Gen Robert Yaw Affram, the Deputy Force Commander of UNMISS, who underscored the importance of the UN medal as a symbol of recognition for dedication and unwavering commitment to duty.

"The United Nations Medal you have received today is a symbol of professionalism, discipline, sacrifice, and steadfast dedication to peace," he said.

"It represents long days under challenging conditions, sleepless nights on operations, and the courage to stand firm in the face of uncertainty. It is earned, never given."

Affram expressed appreciation to the Government of Rwanda and Rwanda Defence Force for their continued deployment of disciplined, capable and professional troops to UNMISS.

Rwanbatt-1 Contingent Commander Lt Col Paul Ndushabandi commended the servicemen and women for their commitment, resilience, courage and selfless service throughout their 10-month deployment.

"I urge the Rwanbatt-1 to maintain this momentum for the remainder of the deployment. Today’s medal-pinning ceremony marks yet another significant milestone in our noble service to humanity,” Ndushabandi said.
